Clash of the Red Rangers Review

Okay, so the new Power Rangers Samurai TV movie “Clash of the Red Rangers” debuted just a couple of hours ago (when I started writing this post), and so far, I’m not sure what to make of it.

On first watch, they seem to be pulling from three different sources to make this special. First, and most obvious, was Shinkenger vs. Go-Onger, only with just RPM Ranger Red making an appearance, and then mixed in with that was the Shinkenger movie, mostly using a re-shot version of the major battle scene and the battle against the now-named General Gut, and what should have been the reveal of the Shark zord/Shark Attack Ranger (Kyoryu Origami/Hyper Shinkenger) but was instead revealed in the Double Red Ranger fight scene, and a random episode which was originally where Kotoha/ShinkenYellow first used the Super Shinkenger power (it was the scene where the Samurai Rangers first come in).

Basic plot summary: The RPM Rangers are still fighting the robot hordes (a.k.a. Venjix) that nearly destroyed humanity, when one bad guy named Professor Cog escapes from his dimension into the Samurai Ranger’s dimension, with RPM Ranger Red on his tail. After seeing the new Samurai Rangers in action, he makes a deal with Master Xandred to eliminate the Rangers in exchange for Sanzu River water, which he plans on using to poison the water supply in the RPM dimension. When he sends out his Grinders to take out the Samurai Rangers, that’s when RPM Ranger Red shows up. He tells the Samurai Rangers that his name is Scott, and that he came from his dimension to stop Professor Cog while he’s in the Samurai Ranger’s dimension. After a fight with the Professor and his Grinder minions, the team is transported by Cog to the RPM dimension, leaving the two Reds who’ve been poisoned by Cog’s hypno-bolts. Both sides regroup, where we see Xandred and General Gut talking about a Mooger army build-up they’ve been planning since before Professor Cog showed up. The next day, with Jayden and Scott growing more and more hostile towards each other, they set off to fight a combined Mooger/Grinder horde, only to start fighting each other. Their fight ends with a fake-out, using the same trick Professor Cog had pulled in Scott in his dimension, and together they wipe out the Moogers and the Grinders using the Samurai’s yet-to-be-revealed Shark Attack and Super Modes. That’s when the others finally return and help them take out Professor Cog and a Nighlock ordered to assist him. After that, they charge into a battle with General Gut and a swarm of Moogers, with RPM Ranger Red and Samurai Gold Ranger fighting from a Red Convertible (it was a Mustang, but they can’t use brand names on Power Rangers for legal reasons). They take out General Gut with Jayden going into Shark Attack Mode, and then finish him off using the new Shark Zord. After which, the Samurai Rangers see Scott off to his dimension, while hinting at a possible upcoming romance between Mike and Emily. 😉

My review: Let me start out by saying that I had started on this post yesterday, shortly after it had premiered, and my impression of it has since changed. If I had published the review I was working on yesterday, then all you would have read was a scathing, nit-picky, dare I say fanboy-esque review, in which I just constantly pointed out every little flaw and complained about every little incongruency with the story, and you all would have probably called me out for it. But since then, I’ve had a chance to see the special again, and rethink my position on certain things, and if I’m honest, it wasn’t half bad considering all the things they had working against them.

For example, we all would have like to seen Eka Darville in person, at least for a one scene, but he couldn’t be there, so we’ll just have to make due with his voice over. One thing I really don’t get though, if they did that just for him, then why not just replace everyone else that couldn’t show with suit actors and give them some kind of voice double, like the very obvious one they had for Steven Skyler/Antonio. They’ve had Ari Boyland on there voicing a Nighlock, I’m sure he could have come in to voice his parts. And I know they needed to fill time by replacing the missing scenes in the movie (Megazord battle with Professor Cog on the Moon, the Goseiger fight scene, etc.), but why use the Shinkenger movie scenes? That just threw off the whole plot line of the movie. Sure, you needed a way to formally introduce the Shark Zord, but why didn’t they just do it in another special? And I’m just ranting again.

Overall, I’d say this was a good special, given the special conditions. Would I say it was the best Samurai has had to offer so far? No. But I do think that the best is waiting just around the corner. After all, there are a lot of big things waiting for us in season two.

Still wish they could have done more with this one. Maybe next time, with whichever two series they decide to make a crossover for, they’ll be able to get a hold of the actors from the previous season before they go off and get new acting jobs.

Clash of the Red Rangers Pics: Must… Contain… Disappointment…!

Hey Everybody! Check out these official pics from the new photo album on Nick.com’s Power Rangers Samurai website. So far, they only seem to confirm that the Red RPM Ranger is in the special, and in the suit the whole time (seriously, couldn’t get anyone?). The pics themselves might not reveal much, but I would pay attention to the titles of the pics when you hover over them, because they would almost tell another story entirely. Take a look for yourselves:

This happy gang of Power Ranger Samurais had their hands full with Moogers long before the RPM Ranger showed up.

The RPM Ranger rides in from another dimension. Awesome.

The RPM Ranger comes from a city so tortured by villains that they had to build a dome to keep them out.

What is the RPM Ranger doing on Earth, and has he come alone?

No matter how far from home, a Ranger of any kind can count on being treated like family.

What's this? Mysterious steam?!? It looks like the Power Rangers are in trouble!

Oh man! Gear-headed hordes have followed the RPM Ranger to Earth!

Interdimensional monsters? The Power Rangers aren't even trying to hear that.

The RPM Ranger joins in the battle against the thugs who followed him across space.

Thanks to the RPM Ranger, the coast is clear... For now.

Don't celebrate too soon, trouble is always brewing in the Power Rangers' town.

Ahhhh! What kind of beast is this? Hopefully the RPM Ranger knows what to do!

The RPM Ranger charges out of the woods on a sweet mystical horse.

RPM Ranger joins the crew in the toughest line-up of Samurais the world has ever seen. But are they strong enough to stop the space Mooger?!

Okay, maybe not what we were hoping for, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be any good. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out (we’ll also look for some sort of advertising for it, since I haven’t seen a single promo for it in weeks). “Clash of the Red Rangers” airs this Saturday, November 26th.

And remember to look for the Samurai Rangers in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! Maybe they’ll get more than a minute of air time this year! 😛

Clash of the Red Rangers Update: Super and Hyper suits used!

It’s official now! They will be using the Super and Hyper Shinkenger jackets in the new Power Rangers Samurai special, “Clash of the Red Rangers”, which debuts Saturday, November 26th at 12n/11c on Nick!

So how the heck to they plan on explaining what it’s suppose to be?

Also, it looks like their might be an all-day Power Rangers Samurai marathon on Nicktoons on Wednesday the 23rd from noon to 9p.m. No confirmation on this yet, but it’s listed tv listing on Funaroboard (the ones who found out that the crossover special would air on the 26th), so theirs a good chance that it’s true.

UPDATE: (11/23/11) There is a marathon running on Nicktoons, right now in fact. And it’s apparently going to run until 9:30 pm EST. So go check that out now!

Clash of the Red Rangers airs this month?!: New plot points please.

Well, this is exciting yet confusing news. According to a new set of Power Rangers timeslot listing for November that were posted on Fuñaroboard, it looks like the Samurai-RPM crossover special “Clash of the Red Rangers” will air this month(!). Specifically, the special is listed as airing on Saturday, November 26th, Thanksgiving weekend.

While there hasn’t been any confirmation of this so far, it’s seems like this may be the real date. The thing that’s confused a lot of people about this revelation is the timing. Assuming that the special is based on the Shinkenger Vs. Go-Onger footage, then this special is taking place almost too early in the story line for it to make sense. For example, what will they do with the fight scene where ShinkenRed fights in Super Shinkenger mode while Go-OnRed is using the Kyoryu Disc to become Hyper Go-OnRed? Or what will they do about Samurai Ha-Oh? Or why hasn’t any advertising come out yet? (Funny how Nick seems to constantly plug other specials sometimes for months in advance, and yet these Power Rangers specials seem to just appear). And if they’re making their own crossover special sans the Vs. footage, what exactly will they do with it?

Anyway, the scheduling is always subject to change, but we’ll keep an eye out to see if any advertising comes out soon. We’ll just have to wait and see what they plan on doing.

PRS Clash of the Red Rangers News: RPM not in gear?

We have some news about the Power Rangers Samurai and RPM crossover special entitled “Clash of the Red Rangers”, but I’m not sure how much you’ll like it. According to FuryDiamond of Rangerboard, his sources have suggested that the no one from RPM has actually appeared for the filming of the special(!). Here’s what he had to say:

None of my sources have confirmed whether any of the RPM cast members are in the “teamup”. All of the ones that were contacted were busy working on other projects.

* One of my sources did mention that they got voice actors to take the place of the cast members.

* Few sources confirmed that they didn’t see any of the RPM cast members on set. This could mean that the RPM scenes were filmed separately or that the teamup is suit only.

Here are the possible scenarios:
1. SUIT ONLY: None of the cast members return. Voice Actors will take their place.
2. SUIT ONLY: Some of the cast members return to do their own voices while voice actors will take the place of the missing ones.
3. HALF SUIT: Some of the cast members return for the unmorphed scenes. Voice actors will take the place of the missing ones in suits.

Well, if this is really the case, then we might not get to see a real team-up special at all. I hope that they can at least get part of the original cast, so that it’s somewhat authentic. While we’d love to see everyone, I would be happy to at least see the main five. Knowing Saban’s luck so far, we’ll be lucky if the replacement voice actors match up.
