A shot in the Dark: Universal Trying again for their Dark Universe with ‘Bride of Frankenstein’, and my two-bits about how they could fix the problems they’ve had so far

Check out my first new post of my new blog!

M.F. Calhoun's Key to Imagination

So, not what I was expecting to write for my second ever post on this new blog, but here we are. According to a new report from Omega Underground on Monday (January 15th), Universal is putting together a new team with director Bill Condon to begin production on the assumed cancelled Bride of Frankenstein movie, that was planned to be set within Universal’s over-hyped Dark Universe franchise. The same Dark Universe that the universally panned Mummy reboot from last summer was set in, and to which a number of other monster reboots were planned pending the success of said panned Mummy movie. No new details have been released, but again, I’m not here to report on this story. Everything you need to know about the story itself is right there in the link. Instead, I’d like to take a moment and dissect what went wrong with their previous attempts from…

Go-Busters 48 & Wizard 20 RAW and SUB: Which is worse, being ignored, or being the center of attention for all the wrong reasons?

No, that’s not some finely coded critique on modern society (though it does fit), this seems to be the overall theme for this week’s new episodes of Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters and Kamen Rider Wizard! For Go-Busters, after learning that Hiromu has the last Messaih Card stored inside of him, and that it was secretly being used to back-up Enter’s data (as well as data collected from the other Messaih cards), the other’s work to find a way to remove the card while Hiromu goes after Enter. Just how far will he go to beat Enter and destroy the card? You’ll have to watch to find out! And on Kamen Rider Wizard, Wizard finds himself trying to protect a newlywed young woman from the Beezelbub Phantom, whose trying to crush her with the despair that comes from being ignored by everyone you care about, all while Rinko starts to dig into Phoenix’s past. Can either Wizard or Rinko get through their tasks? Check out the episode below to find out!

And next week, we’ll get to see the debut of Dark RedBuster, and the debut of the DragoTimer! Not to mention the official debut of Power Rangers Megaforce this Saturday (and yes, I plan on doing something for that), so all in all a big weekend for us toku fans!

Go-Busters 47 & Wizard 19: Fighting chickens and eating phantoms. Sounds a little backwards written down, doesn’t it?

Alright, we’ve got this week’s new episodes of Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters and Kamen Rider Wizard, and they’re both surprising dozies. For Go-Busters, it seems Enter has found a way to make back-ups for back-ups, and while the Busters are trying to figure out where these back-ups could be, Enter has both found a way to make MetaRoids from life forms, and they’ve finally keyed in on Himoru’s weakness. Can they finally get Hiromu over his fear of chickens, or will they figure out a workaround? And on Wizard, it looks like the new Kamen Rider Beast could use a few lessons on how to be a wizard, all while trying to protect the newest Gate from being consumed by despair. We also get to see the debut of Wizard’s Ground Dragon form. And if any of that excites you, you can check it all out below!:

Go-Busters and Wizard Catch-Up: We’ve got a lion, and a show that feels like it should already be over…

Well then, I know you’ve all been missing your weekly dose of Sentais and Riders, so I’ve got two weeks worth! We’ve got Go-Busters Missions 45-46, as we watch while they try to establish post-Messiah lives for themselves, only to realize the fight’s not over yet, and we’ve got Wizard episodes 17-18, where we get to meet Kamen Rider Beast, and figure out his deal (spoiler alert: he’s really into mayonaisse, and I mean really into it). You can check all of that out below!

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

About 55,000 tourists visit Liechtenstein every year. This blog was viewed about 190,000 times in 2012. If it were Liechtenstein, it would take about 3 years for that many people to see it. Your blog had more visits than a small country in Europe!

Jushen ZhanJiDui Ep.1: China’s going Sentai!

Hey, well, this looks like this might be interesing. As some of you may know, Chinese TV Producers have been producing something of their own version of Japanese tokusatsu shows. Some of you may be familiar with the Chinese Armor Hero series (which looks like a massive Kamen Rider ripoff). Well, now they’ve created their own Sentai ripoff called “Jushen ZhanJiDui” (literally Titans Warstrike Team, 巨神戰擊隊), and now the first episode of the show has been streamed. You can check that out below:

Just a quick heads up: I barely understand Japanese, I definitely don’t know Chinese, so if you want a real review of the series, you’ll have to find fansubs somewhere (and send me a link to them).

And in case you do like this, we do have more info on the show at hand:

As you can see, the full team has six members, and from what I can tell, they’re divided into two or three different teams. And what makes this a Sentai ripoff is their use of mechs.

Here are the three team mechs, the Giant God Team Robot, the Giant Land Team Robot, and the Giant Sky Team Robot. The Giant God is comprised of five mechs, the Giant Land has four, and the Giant Sky has three. And of course they can combine together to form one big robot (name unknown). And we even have a pic of their transformation device/personal weapons:

Here are some previews for the show (Note: the only audio on these previews is background, no narration or sound bites):

The show has apparently been in production since October 2010, and the series premiered sometime last month (November 2012). I wouldn’t expect regular updates on this show if you do like it, because it looks like any episodes shared online will be uploaded very sporadically (even if there is demand for it).

Alright, looks like we finally have our hands on the not-so-new movie, Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters THE MOVIE: Protect the Tokyo EneTower!, and it’s the Director’s Cut too (Yay! A whole 35 minutes!).

In this movie, Vargas targets the Tokyo EneTower, and in order to protect the tower, they’ll need help from the new Buster Machine Fs-0O Frog. Can they safeguard the tower from Vargas? Will they be able to coax their new BuddyRoid into entering the fray? Check out the movie below to find out!

Kyoryuger Plot Revealed: Zyuranger 2.0?

“Long ago, in the time of the dinosaurs, the earth was invaded by forces from outer space. The only people capable of the stopping them was a team known as the Kyouki Ryu no Sha, the People of the Strong Dragons, or, Kyoryuger for short. Now, in the modern world, they return using the powers of the Beast Batteries to fight off this revived threat.”

Now, I’ve already been seeing complaints that the plot has the same basic premise as Zyuranger, but since that was to first Sentai to feature dinosaurs, and it’s going to coincide with the 20th Anniversary of Power Rangers, that shouldn’t be that much of a surprise. (Not saying there’s any sort of official tie-in, just that there may be some unspoken influences.)

Kyoryuger premieres February 17th, 2013.
